Whether this ban will deliver cost savings, reduce perceived unfair fines, or lead instead to higher speeds and safety risks remains to be seen.

In a bold—and controversial—move, Premier Doug Ford has announced his government intends to introduce legislation next month that will ban municipal automated speed enforcement (speed) cameras across Ontario. Ford says the devices have become a “cash grab” and claims they have grown “out of control.” He argues that many municipalities rely on the revenue from fines rather than focusing on improving road safety.

On the flip side, critics are sounding alarm bells.

  • The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police has warned that speed cameras are proven tools for reducing speeding, changing driver behaviour, and protecting vulnerable road users—especially in school zones.

  • Road safety advocates point to recent studies showing automated speed enforcement reduced the share of speeding vehicles in downtown school zones by around 45%.

  • In Toronto, Mayor Olivia Chow has cautioned that removing the cameras is a “mistake,” arguing that “speed kills” and the devices help prevent tragedy.

Ford’s decision also carries political overtones. He once helped enable the deployment of speed cameras via 2019 regulations, and his reversal now is viewed by many as a populist appeal to suburban and commuter voters frustrated by perceived “ticket traps.”

Whether this ban will deliver cost savings, reduce perceived unfair fines, or lead instead to higher speeds and safety risks remains to be seen. What’s clear is that Ontario is heading toward a major shift in how it balances enforcement, revenue, and road safety.
