This marks the 17th consecutive year Halton has held the top spot, outperforming Toronto, Ottawa, Peel, Hamilton, and other large regions.
Halton Region has once again been recognized as the safest major metropolitan area in Ontario. Newly released Statistics Canada data, published by Halton Regional Police, shows that in 2024 Halton recorded the lowest overall Crime Severity Index (CSI), Violent CSI, and Non-Violent CSI among the province’s “Big 12” jurisdictions.
This marks the 17th consecutive year Halton has held the top spot, outperforming Toronto, Ottawa, Peel, Hamilton, and other large regions.
The positive trend has carried into 2025. In the first half of the year, Halton saw:
Overall crime down 11.7% (per 100,000 residents)
Auto theft down 32% (254 fewer vehicles stolen)
Break and enters down 26%
Fraud down 13%
Mischief down 21%
Property crime down 12.5% overall
While violent crime rose 2% in raw numbers, it fell 2% when adjusted for population growth. Clearance rates also improved, climbing from 34.5% to 37.8% in the first six months of 2025.
Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner credited strong partnerships and targeted resources, while emphasizing the need to continue addressing serious issues such as home invasions, auto theft, and organized crime. Police Board Chair Jeff Knoll added that maintaining Halton’s safety record requires continued community collaboration and vigilance.
