Paletta Lakefront Park & Mansion: Burlington’s Historic Waterfront Gem

Along the shores of Lake Ontario in Burlington sits Paletta Lakefront Park, a picturesque 14-acre public waterfront park where history, nature, and old-world charm come together. It’s one of those places that feels like a quiet escape from the everyday.

I’ve been visiting this beautiful park since I was a little girl, and it has always held a special place in my heart. Some of my happiest memories are of spending afternoons along the rocky shoreline, letting my imagination wander.

At the heart of the property stands Paletta Mansion, an 11,000-square-foot heritage estate that offers a glimpse into a very different era of Burlington’s past.

Beyond its elegant limestone exterior lies a story shaped by generations of families and a community determined to preserve its waterfront heritage.

The property’s history stretches back to 1809, when the British Crown granted the land to Laura Secord, who would later become known for her role in the War of 1812. Secord and her family never settled here, and the property changed hands repeatedly over the next century.

In 1912, the property was purchased by William Delos Flatt and Cyrus Albert Birge, two prominent figures in the region's history. Flatt was a real estate developer who helped shape Burlington's waterfront communities, while Birge was a successful industrialist who helped establish the steel industry in Hamilton.

At the time, part of the land was used as a fruit farm, while the waterfront was enjoyed for swimming, boating, and fishing.

In 1930, Birge's daughter, Edythe Merriam MacKay, began creating the grand residence now known as Paletta Mansion. The mansion was designed with beautiful architectural details and all the comforts of a luxurious family home.

Edythe travelled in search of furnishings and decorative materials, bringing her own personal touch to the estate.

Inside were features associated with gracious estate living, including a ballroom and servants’ quarters. Beyond the main residence stood a gatehouse, stables, and a delightful little dollhouse.

Together, these buildings offer a fascinating glimpse of life on the property decades ago.

The mansion later became a summer residence for MacKay’s daughter, Dorothy McNichol. In 1990, the City of Burlington purchased the estate for park development, opening the possibility of a new future for this historic waterfront property.

Although the mansion faced an uncertain future, community support helped save it from demolition. The Paletta family, a prominent Burlington family known for their business ventures and charitable contributions, made a generous donation toward restoring the historic estate.

In recognition of their support, the property was renamed Paletta Lakefront Park and Mansion. Following extensive renovations, the mansion reopened in December 2000.

Today, Paletta Mansion is used for weddings and special events, while the surrounding public park invites visitors to enjoy its lawns, trees, and striking views across Lake Ontario.

There is something particularly lovely about Paletta Lakefront Park in autumn. The leaves turn warm shades of gold and rust, the air grows cooler, and a gentle lake breeze carries across the shoreline.

It’s easy to spend an afternoon here without feeling the need to rush.

For me, the park will always be more than a scenic destination. It holds the memories of childhood visits and the simple pleasure of returning to a familiar place.

That is part of Paletta’s enduring charm: a historic estate, a peaceful stretch of waterfront, and a place where new memories can be made alongside old ones.
