As a city dweller, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of urban life, so when I found myself with a free weekend, I decided to escape the noise and head out to some of Ontario's charming small towns. What I discovered was an idyllic, refreshing world that felt worlds away from the urban grind. If you're looking for a peaceful weekend getaway with scenic views, cozy cafes, and rich history, here’s a guide to a few gems I explored.
I kicked off my trip in Elora, a picturesque town nestled on the banks of the Grand River. Elora is well-known for its Elora Gorge, where you can take in jaw-dropping views of limestone cliffs that tower above rushing waters. There are plenty of hiking trails to explore, and if you’re feeling adventurous, tubing down the river is a must in the summer months.
The town itself feels like something out of a storybook, with its old stone buildings and artistic vibe. I spent the afternoon wandering through local galleries and shops, many showcasing works by talented local artists. Don’t miss Elora Brewing Company if you're into craft beer. I had a late lunch there, sampling a flight of their seasonal brews alongside a delicious farm-to-table menu.
Before leaving, I made sure to stop by the Elora Mill Hotel & Spa. Even if you're not staying there, it’s worth a visit for the stunning views over the river. The town’s history dates back to the 19th century, and the Mill, which has been beautifully restored, still holds onto that charm.
On Saturday morning, I made my way to Stratford, about an hour away from Elora. While the town is famous for the Stratford Festival and its incredible performances of Shakespearean plays, there’s plenty to enjoy even outside of theatre season.
First, I strolled along the banks of the Avon River (yes, just like in England!), which winds through the town. The paths along the river are perfect for a morning walk, with scenic views and plenty of swans gliding across the water. There are small cafes dotted along the way—Balzac's Coffee Roasters is a favorite for a midday caffeine boost.
After a peaceful walk, I visited Gallery Stratford, a contemporary art space showcasing both local and international artists. Stratford’s dedication to the arts doesn’t stop at theatre, and I was pleasantly surprised by the town’s creative spirit.
For lunch, I stopped at Pazzo Taverna & Pizzeria, where the wood-fired pizza did not disappoint. With its European feel, Stratford is a food lover's paradise, so I took full advantage and spent the rest of the afternoon wandering through artisanal shops and bakeries.
My final stop was Niagara-on-the-Lake, just a short drive from Niagara Falls. This town is known for its wineries and historic charm. I checked into a cozy bed-and-breakfast with a garden view that felt like stepping into a Jane Austen novel.
After a leisurely breakfast, I headed out for a wine tour. If you’re a wine enthusiast, Peller Estates and Inniskillin are must-visit wineries, where you can indulge in tastings while taking in vineyard views. The region is especially known for its ice wine, a Canadian specialty, and the tastings were as rich and sweet as I had imagined.
Beyond the wine, Niagara-on-the-Lake is steeped in history. The town played a significant role during the War of 1812, and the Fort George National Historic Site offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. I took a guided tour, learning about the town’s strategic importance and its well-preserved architecture.
Before leaving, I explored the town’s quaint main street, lined with boutique shops, antique stores, and flower-filled gardens. Prince of Wales Hotel, a Victorian-style landmark, is the perfect spot for afternoon tea—an elegant way to close the weekend on a high note.
Ontario’s small towns offer the perfect mix of relaxation, culture, and adventure, making them ideal for a weekend getaway. Whether you’re strolling through Stratford’s theaters, sipping wine in Niagara-on-the-Lake, or exploring the natural beauty of Elora, each town has its own unique charm waiting to be discovered.
So, if you ever need a break from city life, hit the road and explore the hidden gems of Ontario—you won’t be disappointed!
