Burlington's Election Is Closer to Your Daily Life Than You Think

Think about the last time a Burlington street made you slow down and enjoy it. A patio that worked, a tree-lined block, a bench somewhere it actually made sense to put one.

Somebody decided that. Not by accident, but through a vote, a budget line, a bylaw.

That's what a municipal election is, and this one is close. Voting runs from Oct. 14 to 26, 2026. The city points out that nearly 60 per cent of Canada's core infrastructure is owned, operated and maintained by municipalities like Burlington. That covers roads, water, parks and the public spaces you use without thinking about them. It's a lot of your Tuesday.

What's on your ballot

You'll choose a mayor, one councillor in your ward (six wards in all), and a school board trustee based on your school support. Your mayor and councillors also sit on Halton Regional Council, but the Regional Chair won't appear on the ballot.

Mayor Marianne Meed Ward announced in June that she's running for re-election, and the nomination deadline passed Aug. 21. The official list of candidates is on the city's election site. Read it before you decide.

How to vote

• Online: from 10 a.m. on Oct. 14 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 23. You'll need the Voter Information Letter, which is mailed in early October.

• Advance polls: Oct. 17 (11 a.m.–5 p.m.) and Oct. 20 (10 a.m.–8 p.m.) at Skyway Community Centre, Burlington Seniors' Centre and Tansley Woods Community Centre.

• Election Day, Oct. 26: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with 24 locations, four in each ward.

• What to bring: your voter information letter and one piece of ID showing your name and address. Photo ID isn't required.

• Are you eligible? You need to be a Canadian citizen, at least 18, and either live in Burlington or own or rent property here (you or your spouse).

• Ward map: boundary changes affect Wards 1, 2, 3 and 4, so check yours.

The questions I'll be asking

I'm not telling you who to vote for. I'd ask every candidate the same few things.

What happens to our parks, patios and public spaces as we grow? Can a family walk to what they need? Who is this plan actually built for, and how will we know it's working?

Burlington doesn't need rescuing. It needs tending, and that's what this ballot is for.
