Burlington raised Canadian tennis sensation Victoria Mboko delivered a stunning performance at the 2025 National Bank Open, earning a spot in the final after a dramatic three-set victory over ninth-seeded Elena Rybakina. The 18-year-old wildcard thrilled the Montreal crowd with a gritty comeback, winning 1–6, 7–5, 7–6(4) after saving a match point. Her breakthrough has marked one of the most memorable runs in the tournament’s history.

With this win, Mboko became the first Canadian to defeat three Grand Slam champions—Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina—in a single WTA event during the Open Era. She’s also only the third wildcard to ever reach the final of the Canadian Open, joining Monica Seles in 1995 and Simona Halep in 2015.

Mboko’s historic run has captivated fans and sparked national pride, especially as she battled through wrist pain and fatigue to outlast her opponents. Her next challenge? Facing four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka, who advanced to the final after defeating Clara Tauson in straight sets. The final promises a compelling matchup between an emerging Canadian star and a seasoned champion.
