The Burlington Conservative Association (BCA) has issued its formal closing notice and started the process to choose a nominee to represent the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) for the next federal election.

A nomination meeting will occur before December, where nomination contestants will address the BCA members before the vote that will decide on who the CPC’s representative in Burlington will be.

Shaheryar Mian, a Burlington resident who is running for the CPC nomination, hopes to claim the position for himself this year and put his background in business and banking to use in politics.

“I am not your typical politician,” Mian said. “I never planned to be. When you’re a businessperson, you’re solving problems, making revenues, managing costs. You’re trying to succeed and tackle competition, and those are all really important skills when you go into government because you have to be solution oriented.”

Mian, who started his career in banking in 2005 in England, worked in financial services for five years before moving to New York to work in management consulting and eventually landing in Burlington in 2013 to enter the real estate industry. His father, Liaquat Mian, owns LJM Developments, a large real estate developer in Burlington.

Mian said that he wanted to get involved in politics because of the pride he feels for Canada.
