City recognized globally for urban forest leadership and community-driven planting efforts.

Burlington has once again been named a Tree City of the World by the Arbor Day Foundation and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, marking the city’s third consecutive year receiving the prestigious international recognition. The award highlights Burlington’s continued leadership in urban forestry and its deepening commitment to protecting and growing its tree canopy.

The achievement follows significant progress made under the city’s Urban Forest Master Plan and Woodland Management Strategy, approved by Council in 2024. Key accomplishments from 2025 include:

  • A new Significant Tree Maintenance Rebate Pilot to help preserve mature trees on private land.

  • A record 1,000 trees planted and distributed in a single week through a free tree giveaway and community event at Longmoor Park.

  • Over 5,000 trees planted annually through more than 15 community events, building on momentum from the city’s first free tree giveaway in 2022.

  • The Meadowway Conversion project along Crosstown Trail, aimed at enhancing biodiversity and supporting pollinators.

  • A research collaboration with the University of Toronto, using drone technology to survey woodlands for pests, disease, and invasive species.

The Tree City certificate was formally presented to City staff during today’s Council meeting, acknowledging both municipal leadership and strong community involvement.

Mayor Marianne Meed Ward praised the recognition, saying, “This honour reflects our city’s deep and growing commitment to protecting our tree canopy and building climate resilience. With Council’s approval of the Urban Forest Master Plan and the success of our community-driven planting efforts, we’re not just planting trees—we’re helping grow a sustainable community for generations to come.”

Director of Roads, Parks and Forestry Enrico Scalera echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the teamwork involved: “This continued recognition demonstrates the strong commitment of our Forestry team and the community’s shared dedication to preserving and expanding our urban forest.”

Michelle Saulnier, Vice President of Programs at the Arbor Day Foundation, noted that trees are a unifying force worldwide: “No matter what country we live in or what language we speak, we can all benefit from the positive power of trees. We’re proud Burlington is among the Arbor Day Foundation’s global network of tree champions planting towards a better future.”
