On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada intends to recognize a Palestinian state at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September. He stated that this move will depend on the Palestinian Authority implementing "much-needed reforms" and holding an election next year in which "Hamas can play no part." Carney emphasized that Canada has long supported a two-state solution, though its viability has been "steadily and gravely eroded."
He added, "Canada will increase its efforts in supporting strong democratic governance in Palestine and the contributions of its people to a more peaceful and hopeful future." While reaffirming Canada's support for Israel, Carney also said, “Hamas must immediately release all hostages taken in the horrific terrorist attack of Oct. 7; that Hamas must disarm; and that Hamas must play no role in the future governance of Palestine.”
