Burlington city staff are proposing an update to the municipality’s flag policy which could see some flags removed from city facilities.

American flags displayed at five Burlington arenas aren’t going anywhere yet, but city staff are proposing an update to the municipality’s flag policy which could see some flags removed from city facilities.

A city spokesperson said staff will use information provided by the federal government to ensure flags displayed conform to the city’s policy and federal guidelines.

A full review of the city’s policy around flag raisings, proclamations and pier lighting was already planned this year, but the report heading to committee of the whole on April 7 also addresses displaying other countries’ flags at local recreation facilities.

Mississauga, Hamilton, Barrie and West Lincoln are among municipalities that have removed American flags from their facilities in response to President Donald Trump’s threats of tariffs and annexation.

Burlington staff recommend a new section to its policy, titled “Foreign National Flags at City Recreation Facilities,” be added to the policy “to formalize existing process and clarify the purpose of the displayed foreign flags.”

The recommended change states the city would only display flags of countries which have active diplomatic relations with Canada.
