Air Canada flight attendants are in the final day of voting on whether to grant their union a strike mandate.
The vote, which opened on July 28 and ends today, follows the end of conciliation talks between the Air Canada component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the airline, with no agreement reached.
CUPE represents over 10,000 flight attendants who have been in contract negotiations with Air Canada since the beginning of the year. The union says that, despite ongoing efforts and participation in the conciliation process with a federally appointed mediator, major issues like wages, unpaid work, and pensions remain unresolved.
Air Canada has emphasized that the vote does not necessarily indicate a disruption will occur, as a strike cannot legally take place until after a mandatory 21-day cooling-off period following the 60-day conciliation phase.
In a statement released on July 25, the airline said it “remains fully available to continue negotiations towards a fair and equitable collective agreement with CUPE that recognizes the contributions of its flight attendants and supports the competitiveness and long-term growth of the company.”
