U.S. President Donald Trump has announced he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15 to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. The Kremlin has not yet confirmed the details, but the meeting would mark the first U.S.–Russia summit held in the United States since 1988.

Trump suggested that any deal could involve “some swapping of territories,” though he offered no specifics. The proposal has raised concerns in Europe, where leaders insist that no agreement should be made without Ukraine’s direct involvement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly stated that his country will not surrender any territory.

The White House is reportedly considering inviting Zelenskyy to the summit, possibly as part of a trilateral discussion, though no final decision has been made. European leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the U.K., Finland, and the EU Commission have issued a joint warning that peace “cannot be decided without Ukraine.”

If it takes place, the Alaska meeting will be the first face-to-face between a U.S. president and Putin since 2021, when Joe Biden met him in Geneva. It will also be Putin’s first visit to the United States since 2015. The planned summit has sparked debate over whether it could lead to a breakthrough in Europe’s largest conflict since World War II, or risk sidelining Kyiv in the peace process.
